Saint Petersburg experiences a humid continental climate of the cool summer subtype, due to the distinct moderating influence of the Baltic Sea cyclones, with warm, humid and short summers and long, cold winters. The average daily temperature in July is 22°C, summer maximum is about 34°C, winter minimum is about −35°C. The record low temperature is −35.9°C, recorded in 1883. SPT19 - BEST OF ST. PETERSBURG (day, lunch included) - 2012 This is certainly a day when you should have your camera at the ready as we will set off for an unforgettable trip around one of the most beautiful cities in the Baltic. Our first stop will be in Pushkin, a town founded in the 18th century as summer residence of the Russian tsars. Here we will visit Catherine’s Palace, which dates back to 1717 when Catherine I of Russia asked the German architect Braunstein to build a summer palace. Over the years, the plans for the Palace were expanded and then, founded to be outdated by Empress Elizabeth, were replaced by a much grander edifice in a lavish Rococo style. We will spend time visiting this sumptuous residence and its glorious park. SPT22 - WALKING TOUR WITH SPILLED BLOOD CATHEDRAL (2,5 hours) - 2012 After a short drive to Senate Square and the Bronze Horseman, a much-celebrated monument to the founder of St. Petersburg, Peter the Great, you will continue on foot along the embankment of the River Neva, with sights such as the Academy of Arts and the Twelve Collegia to enjoy. Have your camera ready as you approach Palace Square for snapshots of the magnificent ensemble. Considered to be the city’s main square, it presents an elaborate blend of different styles with the 18th-century Baroque Winter Palace on the northern and the building of the former Imperial Army General Staff on the southern side. SPT23 - ERARTA MUSEUM & MATRYOSHKA WORKSHOP (3,5 hours) - 2012 Your tour begins with a drive to a souvenir shop for your Matryoshka workshop and a chance to decorate your very own Russian dolls. After each being given a wooden nesting doll, paints and brushes, guests can then begin decorating at their own workstation while being assisted by an on-site expert. The Matryoshka doll you decorate will then be yours to take home as a memento. You will also have time to browse through the store for a keepsake among the many Russian products and have a cup of tea or coffee. The next stop on the tour is the Erarta, the Museum and Galleries of Contemporary Art. Housed in a five-storey building on Vasilyevsky Island, the Erarta is the largest non-governmental museum of contemporary art in Russia. Before returning to port and your ship, you will have some time to spend exploring the museum’s collection, which includes works by more than 140 contemporary artists from all over the world.Please note: for 2-day calls in St. Petersburg this tour is foreseen on following dates:
