Cristobal ligger i Panama, den smale landtungen (“isthmus”) som grenser til Det karibiske hav og Atlanteren og som forener Nord- og Sør-Amerika.
Panamakanalen – verdens åttende underverkCristobal er en havneby på den karibiske siden ved munningen til Panamakanalen. Byen har fått sitt navn etter Christofer Columbus. Panamakanalen har en omfattende historie og mange regner den som verdens åttende underverk, noe som lokker mange passasjerer til å forlate MSC Cruises-skipet for dagen og ta en utflukt langs kanalen. CRI01 - EMBERA INDIAN CULTURE (about 4 hours) - 2011 - 2012
You will have the opportunity to visit the Embera community lives in Amburumia Puru Island inside the Gatun Lake. Embera Indians live today much as they did when the discoverer of the Pacific Ocean, Vasco Nuñez de Balboa first set foot in Panama. The tribal people of Panama have managed to preserve much of their culture and traditions. Embera live in houses built high up, with cone shape roofs. They sit on the floor and sleep on straw mats, so there are no furnishings. While men and women alike do craftworks the basket weaving and ceramics are delegated to the women and the men are in charge of the woodcraft making cooking utensils sticks ritual sculptures and altars. CRI02 - TWO OCEAN RAILROAD JOURNEY (about 5 hours and a half) - 2011 - 2012
Leaving the port on the Caribbean coast, quickly we cross by train (1hour) the Continental Divide and find ourselves on the Pacific side. Approaching Panama Pacific Coast, we have a view on the Locks of the Canal and can also see some of the old Canal Zone areas, recently returned to the people of Panama. A unique experience all together. In the Pacific side you will visit the Miraflores Locks Visitor Centre. Nowhere else in the world can you travel from one ocean to another, crossing the amazing continent of the Americas in only an hour? The return to Cristobal will be held by bus or by train. Note: Limited seats The view on the Canal depends on the speed of the train. There can be delays in the train ride because of congestions in the line with cargo trains. CRI03 - PANAMA CANAL CRUISE (about 6 to 8 hours) - 2011 - 2012
The ride by bus will take you through to Gamboa Dreading Division Pier inside the Panama Canal where you will take the ferry boat that will transport you through the Panama Canal. Once there you will go through Gaylord Cut. The most important and difficult part of the Panama Canal, is where the continental divide is located. After crossing Gaylord Cut you will enter Pedro Miguel Locks on our way into Miraflores Lake. After crossing Miraflores Lake we will enter Miraflores Locks on our way to the Pacific Ocean. Finally you will arrive at Pacific Port that is the entrance of the Panama Canal at the Pacific Ocean. Then you will go by bus back to the ship. During the ferry tour a light snack and soft drinks will be offered. Note: Limited seats The round trip by bus lasts approx. 3 hours. CRI04 - PANAMA CITY TOUR (about 6 hours) - 2011 - 2012 Panama City, founded in 1519. It was the first European city established on the Pacific Coast of the Americas and was Pizarro's headquarters for his conquest of the Incas. The old city was destroyed by the English pirate Henry Morgan in the late 1600s, and rebuilt a few years later on a more defensible peninsula, which became the second Panama City, where much of the impressive colonial and Baroque architecture remains today. The modern, cosmopolitan areas of Panama City add a third layer to this historically rich city. You will learn the history of Panama by touring these three-cities-in-one. Architectural structures in various states of repair survive from Panama City's turbulent past and offer visitors an day of sightseeing among the brick, iron grillwork, and Baroque fades. The nearby skyscrapers and casinos are a reminder that Panama City owes much of its cosmopolitan and international flavor to the Panama Canal, the giant ditch that brings the world to the isthmus. CRI05 - PORTOBELLO AND GATUN LOCKS (about 5 hours) - 2011 - 2012 Leaving the port you will visit Portobelo, which has a market town as well as a fortress. Portobelo became the emporium of the riches of the two worlds, the most important commercial depot of that period and paradise for the pirates. After Portobelo you will visit one Gatun Locks from where you could admire PANAMA CANAL considered the 8th Wonder of the World. This engineer work of art first thought in 1534 by Charles I of Spain, In 1903 Panama and United States of America signed a treaty by which the U.S. undertook the construction of the inter-oceanic canal that jointed the pacific ocean with the Caribbean sea, making it one of the greatest works of all times. Note: Limited seats There are 80 steps to get into the lookout at Gatun Locks; there is also a lower lookout, not as impressive but operation and narration can be heard. CRI06 - KAYAKS AT GATUN LAKE (about 6 hours and a half) - 2011 - 2012 This adventure starts with boarding your air-conditioned coach and transferring to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. Upon your arrival, you will board a motor boat where after a 20 minute ride, you will arrive at the Sounds of Silence Island. Here you will enjoy a snack before engaging in the kayaking adventure on the Gatun Lake of the Panama Canal. This is a great tour for the most adventurous and physically able passengers. Nature is the most common sight in the area where wildlife is abundant.The tour will include a Kayak ride around the wildlife of Gatun Lake, and also a visit to Gatun Locks Lookout where you can see the operation of the Panama Canal.Note: Limited seats Minimum age to participate is 8 years old. This tour is suggested only for passengers physically fit. During the kayaking tour you could get wet; for this reason we recommend you bring a change of clothes. CRI08 - MONKEY WATCH AT GAMBOA (about 5 hours) - 2011 - 2012 After a ride the boat will enter the labyrinth of jungle-covered islands of Lake Gatun. In this protected area the wildlife is plentiful, and you are likely to encounter capuchin monkeys, 3-toed sloth, howler monkeys, various kinds of toucans and other bird life as well as caimans, crocodiles, turtles and wealth of butterflies. CRI10 - Gatun Locks Canal Zone (About 2 hours) - 2011 - 2012 The Panama Canal has three sets of locks. On the Pacific entrance are Mirafloreso chambers, and Pedro Miguel with one chamber. On the Atlantic is one set of locks with 3 chambers, Gatun, the most impressive of the three locks. In this one you will enjoy the experience to see the ships doing the whole process.We also visit the former Canal Zone, where use to be located the military bases of the United States. You can picture the old School of the Americas, nowadays the Melia Panama Canal Resort, where you will stop to buy art crafts and drinks and for sure take a picture of the Gatun Lake.
